Useful things, fired slowly.

Kiln & Clay is a ceramics shop and teaching studio on Paseo del Alfarero in Santa Fe. We make stoneware you'll use every day — mugs, plates, vases — wood- and gas-fired, glazed in the colors of the arroyo. The shop floor doubles as a small gallery of work straight off the kiln shelf, and the studio in back teaches anyone who wants to sit at a wheel.

The shop

Everything is thrown, trimmed, glazed, and fired at this address. Quantities are honest — when a glaze run sells out, it's gone until the next firing.

Mugs

$38–$48

Wheel-thrown, around 12 oz, in sand, olive ash, and iron-red glazes. Handles pulled by hand, which is why no two match.

Dinnerware sets

From $220

Four place settings — dinner plate, salad plate, bowl — in unbleached white or terracotta. Made to order, three to four weeks.

Vases

$60–$180

One-of-a-kind, from bud vases to floor vessels. The wood-fired pieces carry ash markings you can't plan and can't repeat.

We ship nationwide — $12 flat, free over $150 — packed in recycled cardboard and insured. Order by phone at (505) 555-0147 or buy in the shop, Thu–Mon 10–5.

Studio classes

Eight wheels, patient teachers, aprons provided. Clay under your fingernails guaranteed.

The seconds sale

First Saturday of every month, 10am–5pm, in the studio yard. pieces with small cosmetic flaws — a glaze drip, a wobble, a kiln kiss — at 30–50% off. They hold coffee exactly as well as the firsts. Cash and card; no holds, no shipping on seconds. The line forms early and we think that's funny, considering.

The studio

Kiln & Clay sits in a converted adobe garage a short walk from the railyard. Two potters — Ramona Vigil and Theo Marsh — share the wheels, the gas kiln out back, and an opinion about handles that has lasted nine years. We dig a portion of our iron-rich slip locally and mix every glaze in-house from raw materials, which is slower and better.

The shop floor is hung and shelved like a small gallery — work is grouped by firing, labeled with the kiln date, and you're welcome to pick everything up. Wabi-sabi isn't a style we apply; it's just what honest pots look like. If a piece is perfect, check again.
